Innovative Technologies

Expanding into new markets with innovative solutions and technologies

Pentair has invested resources for research and innovation to make our products more efficient, helping our customers get more food, energy and efficiencies from each drop of water.  Here are just a few highlights:

Anaerobic Membrane Bio-Reactor

A wastewater treatment technology, the Anaerobic Membrane Bio-Reactor (AnMBR) uniquely addresses the challenge of producing energy more efficiently and using water resources more effectively. The technology  separates wastewater streams from the food and beverage processing industries into two high value products: methane that can be used as an energy source, and clean water that can be reused or returned to the source for re-charge. The technology can be used in industries such as distilleries, dairies and bio-ethanol production, and won an Aquatech Innovation Award at International Water Week Amsterdam in 2013.

Eco-Select Pool Pumps

There are more than five million in-ground pools in the United States alone, and the energy they require each year is equivalent to the energy produced by 20 medium sized power plants. Pentair led the pool industry  by collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA to develop Energy Star™ industry standards for pool pumps. Since 2005, Pentair’s Eco-Select pool pumps have saved 2.1 billion kilowatts – the equivalent of 73,000 US homes’ energy use for a year.

Aquaponics

To help to meet the world’s growing population’s need for healthy, affordable protein without continuing to over-fish our already stressed oceans, Pentair is working with customers to develop and design aquaponics farms within urban environments. Aquaponics combines conventional aquaculture with hydroponics – growing plants in water – in a symbiotic environment. One such urban aquaponics farm is in the heart of the city of St. Paul, Minnesota. Set to open in 2014, the facility will provide locally produced fish such as tilapia and produce like lettuce, herbs and microgreens to community restaurants and  grocers year round. In addition to bringing a farming revolution into urban food deserts, the aquaponics system is designed to be energy efficient, low input and zero-waste.

Rain Water Recycle System

Pentair partnered with the major league Minnesota Twins baseball team in 2010 to develop their ballpark’s innovative rain water recycle system– one of the highest-profile sustainable water solutions in sports. The system captures, conserves and reuses rain water for washing down stadium seats or irrigating the playing field, thereby reducing the ballpark’s need for municipal water by over 50 percent. Pentair’s custom rainwater recycle system saves the Minnesota Twins stadium more than two million gallons of water a year, and helped it earns its LEED Silver green building certification.
